Serverless functions
Serverless functions are small pieces of server code that run on demand when a request arrives, with the provider handling the servers and charging only for the time used.
What it means in practice
Serverless suits work that comes in bursts, such as form submissions, payments and webhooks, because nothing runs and nothing is billed while it's idle. Vercel, AWS Lambda, Cloudflare Workers and Firebase all offer them.
Marshall Tech uses serverless functions for most product backends and moves a workload to an always-on server when it runs long jobs or holds connections open.
Where this shows up in our work
We apply Serverless functions across these services when we build for Australian businesses.
