Platform as a service (PaaS)
Platform as a service is cloud hosting where you supply the code and the provider runs the servers, scaling and deployments, as Railway, Render and Heroku do.
What it means in practice
A PaaS suits apps that need a server running all day, such as background workers and queues, without the setup a raw AWS account needs. Render's smallest paid web service starts at US$7 a month, and Railway bills per second of CPU and memory.
Marshall Tech uses a PaaS for long-running jobs that sit beside a Vercel and Supabase product.
Where this shows up in our work
We apply Platform as a service across these services when we build for Australian businesses.
