AI readiness assessment: a practical checklist for Australian SMEs

What “AI readiness” actually means

AI readiness is the ability to deploy AI and automation safely into real workflows—so it saves time or improves outcomes without creating new operational risk.

A 15-minute checklist (start here)

  • Workflow clarity: Can you describe the workflow end-to-end (inputs → decisions → outputs)?
  • Data availability: Do you have the data you need, in a usable format, with stable identifiers?
  • Ownership: Who owns the workflow, and who owns the data?
  • Access + privacy: What data is sensitive, and who can see it?
  • Failure handling: What happens when the system is wrong or the integration fails?

Pick one use case and ship it

The fastest path to ROI is usually one workflow: e.g. triaging support requests, drafting responses with citations, extracting fields from invoices, or summarising sales calls into CRM notes.

What you get from a readiness assessment

  • High-ROI use cases ranked by impact and feasibility
  • Blockers (data, process, risk) with specific fixes
  • A two-week plan to ship the first working improvement
